Welcome to the Harrison County Literacy Volunteers Website!
We are a non-profit organization serving Harrison County West Virginia. We offer free and confidential tutoring to adults, teens, and children who seek to improve their reading skills, learn to use a computer, or learn to speak English. We also provide free Homework Help.
Please take a few minutes to visit our site, and please feel free to add comments.
Literacy Volunteers of Harrison County Inc.
Partners with Proliteracy of West Virginia
- 10% of our population (123,622 people) had less than a 9th grade education (2000 census).
- 20% of West Virginia adults function at Level I (third grade level) of literacy.
- Approximately 9,700 adults in Harrison County need help to complete an employment application, follow written instructions, or read a local newspaper.
- Approximately 12,800 adults would require a higher level of literacy to function effectively in society, find employment, or be trained for new jobs as the workplace changes.
Facts About Illiteracy In Our State:
Many people can read, but would need to improve their reading level, math level, or computer skills to pass a GED or college entrance exam, or to train for a different job.
Literacy Volunteers can help with free tutoring.
Helping adults with their basic skills can help solve many of West Virginia's economic and social problems. A person's chance of finding employment increases with improved reading skills. This, in turn, improves his/her ability to support a family.
Our Free Homework Help program has ended for this school year. We would like to thank all of the volunteers, students, schools and libraries that made our program a success.
We hope to see you all again when Homework Help resumes in September.
Our programs are free. Please visit us at 104 East Main Street in Clarksburg, or call 624-0533.
