In the 1960's literacy meant completing the 8th grade. The National Literacy Act of 1991 defines literacy as: "An individual's ability to read, write, and speak English, to compute and solve problems necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one's goals, develop one's knowledge and potential.
In Harrison County, 9,700 adults would need help to complete a job application, follow written instructions, or understand medical or legal papers.

For 31 years, Literacy Volunteers of Harrison County has helped adults, teens, and children improve their reading, writing, and math skills. We have helped adults improve reading and math levels, learn basic computer skills, earn a GED, or pass a college entrance exam. We have helped children and teens improve their grades. Our ESL tutors have helped non- English speaking residents learn to speak, read, and write in English.
However, we need your help to continue providing our programs and services free to the people who need them. We need volunteers who are willing to give an hour or two a week to help someone improve his or her literacy skills. We need donations with which to purchase supplies and materials for our tutor/student teams, and materials for classes and workshops to train new tutors.
If you can volunteer, please come by our office at 104 East Main Street in Clarksburg, call (304) 624-0533, or email lvhcwv@yahoo.com.
